Hi,
I am assuming you are using mdb 4.5? They changed some of the syntax so old code that would've worked in 4.4 may not work in 4.5.
I believe the changed syntax is:

<img src="img/pic.jpg" class="img-fluid " alt="">
<div class="mask flex-center rgba-red-light">
<p class="white-text">Light overlay</p>
</div>
