no errors in console, icons are not displayed

First of all, this is not a complete snippet - I cannot see your template, for example. In the future, use the code formatter - it improves readability.
You can find an example with an icon here: https://mdbootstrap.com/docs/vue/content/icons-usage/#basic-usage - copy both template and script content to your component (fa-camera-retro is not a valid template). If this example from the documentation doesn't work as well, it can be connected to a missing font-awesome import. In order to help I will need to see the entire .vue file, both script and template tags. Best regards, Magdalena
