Topic: access item in select dropdown by keypress

Normally when using the "select" dropdown, a user can press a key on the keyboard to be brought to an item beginning with that letter. This does not seem to be standard functionality in the mdb-select component (https://mdbootstrap.com/docs/standard/forms/select/).

Is there a workaround?

Currently, select does not provide such an option by default. However, you should check select-search. It works similarly to what you expect.
